On 2nd September 2025, Hyderabad Metro played a crucial role in a life-saving medical mission by enabling the rapid transport of donor organs for a heart and lungs transplant. This operation highlighted the critical importance of getting donor organs to the hospital quickly in life-saving situations.

Dr. Giridhar Hariprasad, Consultant Heart Transplant & Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Yashoda Hospitals, Somajiguda, led the transplant team. He emphasized the significance of such swift transportation: “Every minute is crucial in organ transplants. During peak-hour traffic, even a 10-minute delay can be critical. The cooperation of Hyderabad Metro allowed us to complete this journey quickly and safely — something impossible by road at that hour.”

The donor organs were transported from Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar, to Yashoda Hospitals at Madhapur and Parade Grounds, covering 27 km across 21 stations in just 43 minutes.
This operation was executed under the Jeevandan Organ Donation program of the Telangana government, which ensures all organ donations in the state are registered and coordinated for timely transplantation. Dr. Hariprasad credited the program for streamlining organ allocation and saving lives.

Metro officials worked closely with medical professionals and hospital authorities to clear stations, maintain a safe corridor, and ensure the transit faced no interruptions despite heavy traffic.
“Such collaborations are essential,” Dr. Hariprasad said. “They show how government programs, public transport, and healthcare professionals can come together to save lives. Kudos to the Telangana government and Hyderabad Metro officials for supporting these missions.”
Hyderabad Metro has previously facilitated heart transplants in record time, covering shorter distances during earlier green corridor operations, highlighting how urban transit can serve society beyond daily commute.
