“My name is Chandrakala and I have been working as a GHMC worker for 20 years now. Getting married at the age of 11 has taught me to be independent and responsible at a young age. I was not inclined towards studying, therefore I discontinued school after my 2nd grade.
The innocence at that age made me decide to quit studying and I don’t regret. Having said that, I did wish that I was working in a better field but it was my decision and I own it without any regrets.
The idea of cherishing what we have and are gifted with, is what I strongly believe in.
As a child, I was good at milking cows. It was something I loved doing. Back in time, we did not have proper gas lines, therefore we had to break some sticks, burn them and use the fire for cooking.
I had decided to work for my family and myself only because I was determined to educate my children. Such that, they did not have to lean on to another shoulder for help.
I started working at GHMC for Rs. 1000/- per month. I chose to sweep the roads and collect the trash throughout the day only because it gave me a steady income. The income now flies out of our pocket in a jiffy, thanks to the skyrocketing inflation. Back in the day, people were aware of budgeting their income in such a way that they kept aside some money for their savings. The current crop lacks the knowledge. They are not familiar with the concept of being prudent.
As we clean the roads, we do come across people who talk to us rudely, and often with no sense of respect. Whenever this happens, I tell myself that as long as we are doing our work sincerely, there is no need for us to give into unwanted hatred from people.
Despite the pandemic, we GHMC workers chose to fulfill our responsibilities even through the lockdown. People applaud me for the work I do as a frontline worker during these tough times. I believe that no work is big or small, as long as you work hard towards your responsibilities.”
