“It was in October 2020, and the floods didn’t spare anything in our farmers’ community. We have been in this profession for more than 65 years but we had never experienced such a high-intensity flood in this region. The water covered our farmlands and homes had displaced hundreds of people.
Our only source of livelihood, the paddy crop, was threatened. There were times where we had to incur major losses but the recent floods are threatening to displace us. We only managed to recover a few bags of rice when the water subsided. The officials from the government had visited us and promised compensation but we are not quite happy about the relief measures. We would have been able to reap a harvest in 25-30 days but it has got completely damaged.
Since we only sowed paddy and cotton as per the instructions of the government, the responsibility is on the government to compensate for the losses we suffered. We had been trained to handle such a crisis but we are in major distress today. We request the Government officials to take the necessary efforts to help us.Farming is the only hope for us and if we stop working, then who will produce the harvest?”
