“I wait for Ramadan every year. It is my favourite time of the year. The month of Ramadan is so calm and peaceful. We keep all our worries aside and worship religiously.

Eid before my marriage was fun. I grew up in a joint family. Alhamdulillah, I have 7 chachas and many sisters. The amount of fun we all used to have together is inexplicable. We used to shop together, apply mehndhi together, pray together, wear new clothes and used to collect Eidi from all the elders. Collecting Eidi wasn’t easy. We were given a task to complete and only upon its completion, Eidi was given to us. We always looked around to earn more Eidi. My Grandmother used to give all of us Rs. 50. As soon as we used to meet her, she would take out her bundle of Rs. 50 notes and give one to each of us. That Rs. 50 note was more precious than the thousands we collected.

People would rave about my mom’s sheer korma. I will always cherish the time she taught me how to prepare it. I don’t know if I can match up to my mom’s standards of making it but I love discussing the sheer korma recipes with her.

Post Marriage Eid is different yet beautiful in its own way. I still remember the first Eid post marriage. I dressed up in the traditional Sharara and applied mehndhi like a bride. My mother-in-law was sweet enough to treat me like one. She didn’t allow me to do any work. She did everything by herself. Now I have my daughter. She is a toddler but she loves to apply Mehndhi, get dressed and offer namaz with me. She doesn’t know the importance of Namaz yet she emulates me when I am praying.

Although there is no comparison between Eid celebrations before and after marriage, today I feel blessed to have such a loving and understanding husband by my side and a cute little daughter. After all, Eid is all about being grateful for what we have. I am grateful for everything. I only wish my brothers-in-law, sister-in-law and my niece were in India with us during this time. Eid would certainly be more fun with them. Eid Mubarak to everyone.”
