“It’s surprising how one blog can leave such a lasting imprint! Growing up in an economically and socially privileged family, I was never exposed to hardships of any kind. Occasional encounters with reality came in the form of news, but the stinging need to change never lasted. However, in 2014, when I was reading feminist literature, I came across an intersectional piece which changed my ideas of food, justice and liberation forever. Hence began my journey as an ecofeminist and animal liberation activist. Realisations like the problematic tendency to garner enough financial wealth to last generations, but make no similar provisions for natural wealth, and the inseparable link between climate change and social issues like gender justice, poverty and racial – economic injustice, began to dawn upon me.
I started voicing against this blatant disregard for lives and the earth by incorporating individual level changes. I turned vegan 6 years ago when I learnt how animal agriculture greatly contributes to global warming and climate change. Our current food system that heavily relies on animal products (meat and dairy) is highly unsustainable, unhealthy, destabilizing and compounds inequality.
Filling our plates with plant-based food is a great way to change at an individual level. I further switched to sustainable menstrual products (reusable cloth pads and menstrual cups) and made the decision to not have a biological child.
Even in my professional space, I tried my best to spread the word. I worked as a lecturer for 5 years and missed no opportunity to introduce my students to the concept of sustainability through seminars about waste segregation, ills of plastic, environmental awareness programs and the impact of our choices on animals and the environment. I knew that change might take some time but the seeds had definitely been planted in their minds.
This World Environment Day, let us pledge to do our bit and spread the message of sustainability. Let us combat species loss and ecosystem degradation. Let us build back better for humans, non-humans and the planet. Let’s do it, for now, it’s time for nature!”
