“It was at 11:30 pm, in the middle of a family function at a relative’s house, that I got the call. It was an unknown number. When I answered, the caller identified himself as an officer from the Neredmet Police Station, standing at my door. Before he could speak any further, I thought of every possible negative news including burglary at my house and panicked. But then, in a calm voice, the man asked me if Mr. Venkatram, who had come to visit from abroad, was staying with us. My son, who lives in the United States, had gone to Australia for work and came to Hyderabad on his way back, with a layover at Singapore.
I confirmed the same. The cop further asked me if my son or any of us had any illnesses, to which I replied that he had come on the 3rd and left on the 19th of February itself. The policeman then confirmed the date and went on to apologize for calling at such a late hour. When I asked him how he got my address, he told me that the airport authorities shared details from the immigration forms and asked the concerned police stations to follow up.
This call by the police left me feeling peaceful and assured. They were identifying everyone who came into the city, specifically from Abroad and isolating people who showed symptoms of corona virus. That night, I realised the efforts put in by the Telangana Government and the Police to ensure our wellbeing. The policeman was still on duty, late at night when we were all going to bed! These efforts from the legislature and executive reinstates my belief in the state and system. If these attempts are coupled with good practices by individuals like physical distancing, hygiene, sanitation and sharing the right information, especially to those who can’t receive it, I’m sure the fight against COVID-19 will end sooner than anticipated!”
