“We have been making a living as doll makers for over five decades now. I entered this profession when I was 6. Belonging to the Rajasthani Kathputli community, I was firm on my decision to continue this profession and follow in my parent’s footsteps.
We make all kinds of toys including contemporary models. Each of us manages to make up to at least 10-12 dolls a day. Later, we take them to exhibitions and fairs and sell whatever we can. People expect new, innovative and colourful varieties so we are constantly upgrading our making process.
Most of the money goes on travel and stay. The men in our community also play the drums at weddings and functions. We used to earn decent money in the past, but ever since the pandemic struck, we were completely out of orders. Today, we’re barely left with the savings and we are finding it difficult to afford three meals a day. We are unable to seek admission for our children in government schools as we don’t have the required documents. We are requesting authorities to help us and provide the necessary support so that our art will flourish further.”
