“It was love at first sight for both of us! His relatives were my neighbours. One day, while walking back from music college, I saw him outside their house. We stared at each other for a few seconds and smiled, which was a big thing back in our day. I couldn’t stop thinking about him after that. Turned out, he had seen me earlier and was making inquiries as well! In a week’s time, ‘pelli choopulu’ or the alliance meeting was arranged. Four months later, we were married.
Neither of us had the guts to ask our families if we could meet before the wedding, so, we would only dream about each other and a future together. I was just 18 years old then and had to quit my music course and shift to Chennai for his work. I loved music and he knew that. So he encouraged me to pursue my passion. He ensured I completed my course in music and also pushed me to work with All India Radio. That was a big surprise, considering the norms of society back in the day! I continued to host shows for AIR in different cities – wherever my husband’s job took us.
There was no ‘seeking permission’ or any of that. It was always a mutual decision, after a discussion. When we had children, my husband would often take care of them when I went out for work or otherwise. Every time he travelled to another city or country, he would bring me sarees from there. It was always special. We participated in different ‘Couple Competitions’, which we always won and travelled almost the whole country together. You won’t believe when I say this, but we never fought. We would’ve had a couple of brief arguments but it never led to a fight. We’ve always been understanding and supportive of everything the other one does. That’s what has kept us together for more than 50 years!”
