“When I lost my mother a couple of years ago, it was the end of the world for me. Life didn’t mean anything anymore. My mom was the only one who accepted me the way I was. Throughout my childhood, she understood my body and mind, when she saw me dress up like a girl. She told me that the world isn’t a kind place and that is true. But till that day, I had her to go back to everyday, after fighting the world for being transgender. Once she was gone, everything seemed meaningless. I went into depression and started having suicidal thoughts. What would I do without her? Would anybody ever love me like she did? About six months later, I got a surgery done and became a transwoman. I started working and soon, I met my now boyfriend. Like many others in the society, he didn’t know much about transwomen or sexuality. We met through a few common friends, started talking and soon, I fell in love. He was extremely caring and kind. He would understand my feelings and was always considerate.
Throughout my life, I have not met anybody like him apart from my mother. With him around, I laugh, I smile and most importantly, I feel safe. He’s yet to discuss our relationship with his family. There’s a lot of taboo around marrying a transwoman in this society. But we’re hopeful that his parents will understand and we’ll be together forever. For both of us, love isn’t about bodies. That’s lust. Love is about two hearts and I hope the society understands this.”
