“Every year on Maha Shivaratri, my day begins at 3 AM. The first place I visit is the Thousand Pillar Temple in Warangal for the Abhishekam. The temple, with its beautifully carved pillars and centuries-old traditions, has a different atmosphere during this time. From there, the day continues with other temple visits, rituals, and cultural programs.
Growing up, Shivaratri wasn’t just about prayers and fasting. There were all-night cultural programs, special screenings, and temple gatherings. Even now, I make it a point to visit some of the well-known Shiva temples around Warangal—Ramappa, Bhadrakali, Kota Gullu, Palakurti Somanatha, Komuravelli Mallanna, Kothakonda Veerabhadra Swamy, and Mettugutta Ramalingeshwara Swamy. Some temples have remained unchanged for centuries, while a few others are in a dilapidated state, but their significance stays strong.

From early morning, the celebrations begin—Abhishekam, Anna Puja, Shiva Parvati Kalyanam, bhajans, classical music, and the grand Lingodbhavam at night. The sounds of temple bells, Vedic chants, and music create a setting unlike any other.

Warangal’s temples are not just places of worship but also architectural wonders. The Ramappa Temple, known for its floating bricks and sandbox foundation, is the only temple named after its sculptor. Every pillar, every carving tells a story. The Perini dance, once performed by warriors before battle, is still practised here, keeping a piece of history alive.

Maha Shivaratri is an opportunity to pause and reconnect—with our traditions, our history, and ourselves. In a world full of distractions, it’s a reminder of where we come from and what truly matters.”
