“Seeing pictures of the Amazon forest burning down is extremely sad. It went on for days and the reason can’t be just ‘natural’. It is definitely a result of destruction by humans. What we should not forget is that all these trees were not grown manually or planted just a couple of years ago. Once gone, it’ll take many decades for a forest even half as dense as the Amazon to be rebuilt. Implications of this mass destruction will be felt across the world. Greenhouse gases will increase and so will the temperatures.
Here in Telangana, we’ve been working towards preserving whatever green spaces we have, while trying to have more as well. The Haritha Haram project has been quite successful and that’s majorly because of the public. Citizens here are aware of the importance of conserving nature. Many institutions also joined us in our venture. In more than 25 years of my experience as a forest officer, this is one of the few states that has been strict with encroachment, while also working on human-animal conflict, which is a big challenge. Time and again, I’ve emphasised upon the need to work with tribal families
before governments and other authorities. Getting them to work on forest restoration helps us decrease migration as well. These are a few things that we, the Forest Officials focus on, but the change must start at home. Growing up, I was always asked to use as little water as needed and to plant small saplings at home. When you love nature and understand its importance, you automatically wish not to destroy it. Each one of us needs to build this interest, first within ourselves and then our kids. They’re the future and they need to learn to preserve everything we inherited.”
