“I once taught a 58-year-old woman to ride a bike. Imagine that! It was one of my best experiences. Initially, the old lady was doubtful but I assured her that her childhood dream of riding a bike can come true if she’s determined to learn. It took us 10 days and she started to ride a bike all by herself. This was a part of MoWo – a group to empower women through mobility. In this journey, I’ve taught women how to ride a bike and use that to earn money. The challenge lies in making them feel confident that they are as good as anybody else or even better.
I grew up in a house where my brother and I were always treated equally. When my dad brought home a Luna, both of us were taught to ride it. In 2013, when we bought an Enfield, it was for everybody at home. I never felt like I was any less stronger or less capable than my brother in anything. I took up GoUNESCO challenge covering all of India’s 28 UNESCO sites in 2012. I won the challenge and that not only nourished my travel bug but also left me wanting for more. I also started the Hyderabad chapter of Bikerni and started to go on biking trips once a month with other women. In 2018, I went on a 17,000 km trip with four other women across six Asian countries in 56 Days. As women riders, we always have two things to think about: road safety and women safety. Unfortunately, that’s not the case of men riders. Although we’ve travelled across the world and come back home safely, I know that the society has gradually become unsafe for so many women. The recent events in Hyderabad has left me disturbed. I want to do my bit in making women feel safer. That’s the idea behind MoWo as well, to teach young girls to ride and help them be empowered, financially, emotionally and physically. I see how biking has made me feel courageous and strong and I want to do the same to other women around me.”
