“The constant fear of being hurt, of having a heavy piece of concrete fall on you, and lack of facilities to protect ourselves from it is inconceivable.
I am a construction worker who is also a proud mother of two kids. Life as a construction worker is strenuous because the equipment provided for our safety is not favorable. The manual work is undeniably exhausting.
Going through the pain both physically and mentally every day is my way of getting through life. I have taken an oath that no matter what comes my way, I will put my best foot forward in providing my kids with the life that I could never have. I know, my travail will bear fruits someday.
If you ask me what my ultimate goal is, then with no second thought, I would say that I want to see my children happy and content.
Every construction worker here is aware of the risks. It shakes our very being when we hear about another worker’s death, but do we have a choice?
Growing up with six siblings, my family and I faced insurmountable difficulties and couldn’t afford education. My father passed away a few years ago and I was left devastated. Instead of pining, I channelized my grief into doing something productive in life.
So, here I am, this is me and there’s nowhere else on earth I’d rather be because all these efforts and pain are shallow. What is real is my will to survive and my grit to make my children become good human beings.”
