“I grew up in the lively world of Surabhi theatre plays with our Surabhi Drama theatre community, which has been around for 138 years.
Originally one big group, we later split into smaller ones across the country, but our love for art kept us connected. I’ve played various roles such as a makeup artist, performer, musician in hundreds of plays, but sadly, the interest in our traditional art has declined over time.
Back in the day, our 20-rupee ticket shows were always full, but now things have changed. My kids, in high school, are also Surabhi artists, and they’re working hard to carry on our tradition.
We’re doing our best to introduce this art to younger generations in fun ways. We hope for support from people and the government to keep our families going and preserve this cultural treasure.”
