“Idli, Dosa, Puri, Biriyani, Pulao… I know the menu by heart and can list it in any order. It’s something I wake up to every morning, and is thankfully the last thing I had to memorize after dropping out of school.
I come from a small town called Palasa in the Srikakulam district. Growing up, I had big dreams of becoming a musician. I always wanted to spend my life exploring different places, meeting new people and performing live at music concerts. But I had a pretty intense reality check in class 11 when my family ran into some severe financial crises. My father had invested all his savings into his business which suffered severe losses due to some internal issues. That was a major setback for our family, and caused us to restart everything from scratch. For over a week, my tears refused to stop. Nothing made sense. My father was under so much pressure at the time, and he was hospitalized for months. That’s when I decided to step up to support my family. When I had to choose a career between pursuing my dreams or doing a job, responsibility won with a clear hand, and I moved to Hyderabad for work. I began working as a waiter in a restaurant to provide for my family. It’s been more than seven years since I started working in the hotel industry, and I have been promoted to head waiter here in the Ratna restaurant, after the completion of my diploma in hotel management.
I follow certain principles when my shift begins. Customers can sometimes be rude; some show their dissatisfaction towards a dish on me.. but I never lose my patience. I’ve learned one thing over the years: No matter how angry a guest is or how bad a situation is, if I keep my voice soft and address them with a smile on my face, they calm down. Even in the kitchen, the chefs give priority to my orders because I’m always smiling. Well, that’s my approach to work. I’m known for my quality of service and presence of mind. Sir, I think I have done enough talking; I am in the middle of my shift. Would you like to place an order?”
