“Chasing goats into the forest, climbing trees and plucking fruits to chew on while they grazed – in that moment I was infinite.
These memories are what keep me going. I am someone who always walked around with a smile on her face until my husband managed to take that away from me. I was married at the age of eleven to a man who was an abusive alcoholic. Because of my two tiny kids, I didn’t have the strength to leave him. So I took all the blows that came my way, literally and metaphorically.
I got my kids married and saw them settle down and have babies. That was when I finally walked out on him, leaving him to his alcoholism. He remarried after I left. He died 4 months back, drowning in his alcohol, leaving everything he had to his second wife and nothing for me.
Now, I work as househelp, making a living by working in multiple houses.
My day starts at 6:00am. I have coffee and head to work. When I come back home from a busy day, my daughter-in-law keeps hot rice and curry ready for me. I put on the television, sit with my grandkids and eat. From the moment I reach home to the next day before work, I don’t move a muscle to do anything, that’s how well my daughter-in-law takes care of me.
I love cooking! I learnt cuisines of different cultures from the people I worked with. Now, you name a dish and I can cook it!
You see, I don’t know when I’m going to die but right now, I am happy. All I want to say is, life is hard and we need to get through it no matter what. We need to work for ourselves and live for ourselves. At the end did the day, you only have yourself right?”
