“Bonalu, a centuries-old festival in Hyderabad, has a rich history that dates back to 1823. It all started when a devastating plague swept through the city in the 19th century. The people prayed to Goddess Mahakali and so, the tradition of Bonalu was born.
As Potharajus, we’re proud to be a part of this legacy. Our intricate makeup, which costs anywhere between Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000, is a labor of love. We’ve modernized our look, moving away from traditional vermilion and ash, but our dedication remains the same.
We represent Mahakali’s power and protection, wielding our whips with precision and grace. Our role is crucial in the Bonalu festivities, embodying the spirit of the goddess and bringing her blessings to the people. Seeing the joy in the people’s eyes makes it all worthwhile. We’re blessed by the trust placed in us and strive to honor the legacy of Bonalu and the goddess Mahakali with every performance.”
