“I carry the legacy of Bidri craftsmanship, a heritage passed down by my grandfather and father. Originating centuries ago, Bidri wares boast a blend of zinc and copper, adorned with a silver flourish within. This art form, born in Persia, found its way to Hyderabad during the reign of the Qutb Shahi dynasty in the 14th century.
In its prime, the demand for these exquisite pieces shielded us from the raw material costs. However, as alternatives emerged, coupled with the escalating price of silver and a dearth of essential resources, our craft faced challenges. Despite reaching out to the state government for financial assistance to revive this time-honored tradition, we stand at a crossroads,” reflects Khaleel, a custodian of Bidri’s rich history in the heart of Hyderabad.
