“How is one promoting health and wellbeing in designed spaces? This is a question that is not answered by many designers.
Warm greetings, my name is Ashwini Shwetha Ketharaj. I’m the founder and principal architect of ASK space design studio, Hyderabad. I focus on ‘Therapy Interiors’. Therapy-interiors essentially means designing the space which adapts to you and is extremely personalised based on your personality and behaviour in a way that optimises and channels your energy in a direction that in turn, is rejuvenating, relaxing, and gives an all-new perspective in life.
As a child, I have always been keen on visualising and designing spaces. Always wanted to grow up to be an architect. Surprisingly I’m a first-gen architect and didn’t have any kind of architectural influence from my social circle. My enormous interest in this subject paved the way to pursue Architecture Under-graduate studies (B.Arch) in New Delhi, and then Master’s from CEPT University, Ahmedabad. Had an opportunity to go for an exchange semester through Master’s programme at HFT, Stuttgart, Germany.
Post my Master’s, I worked as a Luxury Interior architect in New Delhi for a few years and then moved to Germany and gained experience in Experiential space design. My interest in Therapy interiors or the psychology of space has developed while I was doing my masters as I was exposed to multiple aspects of space and its impact. Since then I have been doing extensive research on the same and travelled to more than 15 countries to gain a substantial amount of expertise.
I emphasise on the fact that spaces have the capability to leave an impact on us in a positive way or a negative way. Many people unknowingly end up creating a negative space for them which leads to multiple mental and physical health issues. The space can lead them to be forgetful, stressed, anxious, confused or even depressed. I aim to craft out spaces in a manner that impacts people residing in a very efficient way and brings out a better quality lifestyle.
Interior therapy is a subject that indeed is the need of the hour. A subject that needs to be explored much more at a larger scale. After all your environment is the extension of your personality and I aspire to make it the best.”
