“My first memory with a vintage watch? Hmm, it definitely involved my father; he had quite a few remarkable ones. When I was young, I used to spend time after school helping him with his watch business. I was not very good at academics so I decided to learn watch repairing as a technical course.
The job of watch repairing is incredibly challenging as it requires tremendous concentration and sharp sightedness. There are a lot of detailed aspects to be understood about vintage watches, from their build to engineering to basic mechanics. But thankfully, with over 50 years of experience in the field, I have had the opportunity to train many young gentlemen who are now successfully working in this profession.
Before industrialization took over, there were only handmade clocks. A clockmaker took care of the mechanism. Then, it would go to the case maker. It involved at least four people’s inputs to produce a working clock. But things have changed over the last 60 years. When I took over the business from my father, there was a tremendous improvement in terms of procurement and technology of these watches, especially the Swiss models.
Back then, not everybody had a watch on their wrist. Clock towers were the only way for people to tell time. With my passion for repair, I’ve traveled to many places across India to restore these clock towers that form a major part of our history, and are iconic heritage symbols in all these cities.
Considering my previous works, we were appointed by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to repair the clock on the Moazzam Jahi Market Clock Tower in January. They seemed to be quite impressed with our work, following which they requested us to get the one at Secunderabad Clock Tower operating, which we did successfully last week.
Now we are working on the restoration of the clock on James Street Road in Secunderabad. I feel extremely honored to be a part of the restoration processes of all these historic clock towers, and I truly hope the government continues to take up these initiatives in the future too.”
