“The Coronavirus pandemic has impacted everyone’s lives. While some of them are managing by working from home, people like us who depend on daily wage income have been impacted.

Even though I had worked with a few private companies earlier, I have forced myself to move into this profession due to the impact of the pandemic, as I am supposed to provide for my family. Many are in home isolation and are relying on the online food delivery platforms due to various reasons, be it some of their family members got infected with Covid or to have a quick alternative for cooking as they would be occupied working from home. That’s also one of the reasons why I have decided to serve during these volatile times.

I feel happy that I am able to serve so many families get their daily meals. Of course, it is at the cost of my health – it’s a big risk to visit so many places but I certainly believe this is my responsibility as a frontline worker. Some customers are very understanding and courteous- they offer to put a bag from their balcony so I don’t have to enter the building and understand the possible delays due to the food preparation process. But there are also a few customers who complain about the food taste which is not under my control. But you can’t say anything to them – once you’ve taken up this task, you’re ready for whatever comes your way.

Essential services, which includes food and grocery deliveries, are allowed but confusion persists over working hours during the lockdown. The police did stop us initially. Fortunately, the company has taken the necessary permissions to serve the public from the government officials. They also provided us with a list of guidelines to make sure we handle the food safely. There will be regular temperature checks and sanitization measures which we follow.

My wife and children are concerned about my health every morning when I go out but they also understand that I am doing a service to the citizens during these uncertain times. When I come home in the evening, I see them smile because of this job. I would honestly do anything for that!”
