‘It was when I admitted her into Braille School that I saw adults who had absolutely no contact with the visually challenged learning the language. That’s when I realized, I should be learning Braille with my daughter too. This thought pushed me to pursue B.Ed. in Special Education. She was six months old when we realized that she couldn’t see at all. It affected us a great deal. We’d spend a lot of our time crying over our luck and wondering why our dear daughter was not given the joy of sight. But soon I realised that I couldn’t let my daughter’s impairment hamper her road to success. I wanted to ensure she studied and lived like any other child! So I enrolled her into school, music classes and made sure she learnt different instruments too. Soon, we saw that she excelled at the calendar and with the use of mathematics, she was able to ascertain the days in accordance to the dates, much ahead of time. Today, she is pursuing her final year of Bachelor’s degree in both Arts (Psychology) and Music, simultaneously. Since her school days, she has been translating her notes into Braille as I read them out to her. With help from the Devnar Foundation for the Blind and the National Association for the Blind, we managed to procure all her textbooks in Braille too. At her music classes, I translate her notes for her and I’ve begun to learn music that way as well! It’s almost as though we’re inseparable. We spend all our time together, something most other parents miss out on. Although I spend my entire day with her, it’s not true that she’s entirely dependant on me. She fulfills her daily chores, her hygiene needs, her food needs and so much more by herself. All through her life, everyone of her friends and family has been extremely supportive of her. Partly because we chose to ignore and block all the negativity. ‘I want to pursue her B.Ed and M.A. and become a teacher!’ she says and in my opinion, nothing can stop her!”
