“Ganesh Chaturthi is a celebration for many, but for us, it is a make or
break time of the year. We have been in the idol making business for the past 15 or 18 years…. I am not very sure about it, as I am an uneducated person and cannot really track the years passing by. But, one thing I know for sure is
that, in all these years life was anything but easy.

Though we call it a business, we are not like owners who can assign the work to others and take a break when we want. Our entire family works day and night, throughout the year making idols, not just of Ganesh but other Gods and Goddesses too. We hardly have any holidays or free time. And, forget about making a profit, sometimes we can’t even pay interest on our loans.

These days clay idols are getting popular and we don’t even know how to make them. On top of this, we don’t build idols against advance orders, so
risk is always a factor. We simply do what we have been doing for so many years now…just think of some designs that might do well, make them and display for sale. Amidst all these uncertainties and struggles, the fact that we as a family are into this together and share what we
have, is a good enough reason for us to smile our worries away.”
