“It was the 31st of December. A night where wishes came true and resolutions which would probably never be followed were made. It was my final semester and celebrations were not in sight because studies were the priority. I wanted to take a break. So, I decided to head to my friend’s place where I had a beautiful nap and waited for her to get back from work. When she finally did, I hugged her tight and burst out, crying. All the sadness, hopelessness, everything finding an expression through my tears. It was 9:30 PM. I gathered myself and told her I’m going for a walk and that I will be back soon. I really needed a good breath of fresh air. I started walking. I walked past the heavy traffic, the TCS office, the bars where from a distance I could hear the countdown, ‘10,9,8,7….’. I passed by the balloons and a smile found its way to my face. Just then, I saw a couple sitting on the footpath. They were asking a passer-by for something. The passer-by was rude. I felt a strange ache when I looked at them. With 20rs in my pocket, I decided to get them something. It was getting late and I was 2kms away. I walked for another half a kilometre when I saw a small ‘paan dabba’ where two men were smoking. I bought some biscuits and went back to the couple and handed them the polythene bag with the biscuits in it. The minute I did that, the old man took my hand and started to cry. He said, ‘Ya Allah! Kahaan se aayi ho tum beti? Meri biwi ko bukhaar hai dekho, subah se kuch nai khaya tumko allah khush rakhe’. (Where did you come from, you sweet girl? My wife has fever and she hasn’t eaten anything since morning. May Allah keep you happy). They were smiling at me with tears in their eyes.
With the world that taught me to never always be good, I was scared the entire time with all my ‘what ifs’. But seeing them in that moment, made me cry too. That night, I came back home with a light heart and a happy soul. I did something right.
Even today, when I think of that night, I realise that it’s always these little things that matter the most. Because in the end, these are what you will remember.”
