“As a lactation consultant, I often meet mothers worried about their baby’s growth. But behind those questions, I see something deeper: exhaustion, guilt, and the pressure to be perfect. This Mother’s Day, I want to remind every woman: “You aren’t just feeding your baby; you are nurturing yourself, too.”
During pregnancy, the focus is often on scans and shopping, but we rarely prioritize emotional wellbeing. Postpartum challenges involve a profound shift in identity. I’ve seen doctors and engineers hesitate to ask for help, fearing it looks like weakness. In reality, reaching out is an act of strength. When a mother feels supported, she heals faster and bonds more deeply.
My path to becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) began after my own journey into motherhood. I already had a strong background in nutrition, but I realized that even with professional knowledge, the early days of parenting can be incredibly isolating. I wanted to help women navigate this phase with science-based confidence rather than following trends.
Some of my most moving experiences happen in the NICU. These mothers are incredibly resilient, balancing fear and hope. Often, they don’t need clinical advice as much as they need someone to listen and say, “You are doing enough.” I also advocate for the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, ensuring staff are trained to provide this vital support from birth. Seeing the relief on a mother’s face when her baby finally latches is what keeps me going. You aren’t just helping her feed her child; you are helping her believe in herself again.
Supporting a mother goes beyond medical guidance; it’s about acknowledging her invisible battles. One thing I learnt from my mother is that love and patience can heal more than words ever can, and I try to bring that same warmth to the mothers I support. When you support a mother, you don’t just change her day—you change her world.
My message to all the new mothers is to trust your instincts, be gentle with yourself, and remember that every small step in motherhood is beautiful.”
