“My name is Shanti and I’m a Domestic Worker. My husband is an Auto Driver. I lost my Parents at a young age. I have five siblings, three sisters and two brothers. My parents passed away after my second sister’s marriage by committing suicide due to debts, leaving us all orphan and no one to care for. My elder sister had her own family to look after so she couldn’t take up the responsibility and same with my second sister. So I decided to guard my brothers and a sister. They were really young when my parents passed away. I would say, it was the most terrible and painful phase of my life.
Loosing parents at such an early stage and taking up responsibility was truly tough. After my father’s death, our story was published in a newspaper. An NGO saw that article and took my brothers in their shelter home and provided education and good food. My younger sister and I stayed in the village for about one year. Later, I decided to move to the town for the better education of my sister.
After coming to the city I joined my sister in Home for Needy and Old Age and worked as a helper in the same organization. Here I met my husband for the first time. He was a personal driver to the superintendent of the organization. In the course time we loved each other and decided to get married dispite belonging to different communities. Initially we faced taunts and unacceptance from my mother-in-law’s and from my relatives but later on everything got sorted out and we are happily leading our lives with two children.”
