“I was born into a modest and simple family where we were taught to live by principles. My father was a school teacher, who was strict when it comes to our values and respect for society and people. Although I grew up studying science, after my graduation, I knew I wanted to pursue writing and journalism. Back then, there were very few media organisations and journalists. But I wanted to be one of those few. I’ve written more than 5,000 stories for leading publishing houses like Economic Times, The Hindu, Indian Express, and even online portals like Wire. I have also commented on various channels like Republic TV, NDTV, Al jazeera. One thing I’ve learnt in this journey is that you need to adapt to changes all the time. As a journalist, I needed to be open to learning. It gave me the opportunity to explore subjects like economics and political science, among others. As a professor, I do the same! I teach students to have an appetite for learning. Irrespective of your profession and interests, it’s important to understand that the world is changing everyday and there’s so much happening. You need to keep up! Teaching isn’t about imparting skills alone. It’s about making the students ready for the world. It has to be a two-way process – they’re from a different generation. If you don’t listen to them, they won’t listen to you. A teacher needs to be a master of his or her subject, needs to have a commitment towards society and of course, needs to be greedy to learn more. I try to be more of this every single day, and that’s the reason why I’ve continued to be a teacher for so many years.”
