“Growing up, I helped my parents in the fields everyday. I saw them struggle to make ends meet. They’d sell milk and vegetables but would only make enough to feed the family. I knew I wanted to do something big and make them proud. In high school, I was a part of Scouts and Guide. I also explored many sports and physical activities. Later, I joined NCC Secunderabad and was selected for mountaineering. I went through many coaching sessions before getting ready to climb Mount Everest. I had no clue about the weather at the peak or the safety measures that need to be taken, slowly, I learnt about it all. Honestly, it seemed dreamlike that coming from a small village in Ranga Reddy district, I would go so far and climb the highest peak in the world. I spent about two years trying to find sponsorship. It was difficult because no organisation was willing to agree but I didn’t give up. This was my one chance to achieve something and I didn’t want to let go. So once I recieved the sponsorship, I reached the base camp and started my journey. That’s when I realised it was actually happening. It wasn’t surreal anymore. I had to be focused and confident before taking any further decision on this journey. There were times when people gave up. We even heard of people who died after slipping on the ice. I was filled with many negative emotions. I felt nervous and scared. It’s so important to keep yourself positive to get going, but when everything around you seems to be falling apart, positivity comes hand. That’s the challenge, I’d say. Mental and emotional stability. Most people often say it was their biggest achievement to have reached the peak, but for me, I feel like it was one of the toughest and worst days of my life. I’m grateful for the opportunity, of course. But what I went through can never be put in words. It was difficult and irrespective of all that I learnt in this journey, I wouldn’t paint a happy picture only to make it sound amazing.”
