“It was in an urgency that I left university in the U.S. and flew back home. Needless to say, because of the quarantine adviced due to the COVID-19. For the first ever time, I found the airport nearly empty. It was calm, with no chaos or queues- an extremely new feeling – just like the social-distancing experience. The hygiene and other precautions taken by the passengers, airport staff and the airlines were symptomatic of the pandemic that we’re dealing with. Regular sanitation and safe distancing between people, both during security and during the journey was ensured. The carrier was also constantly fumigated. Everyone was wearing a mask and many, including me, even wearing gloves and carrying disinfectants. The precautions were reassuring and frightening at the same time. The intensity of the global situation was felt at the airports. When I landed in Hyderabad, it felt so different. As soon as I exited the Aero-bridge, I was checked for temperature and made to undergo a thermal body screening, following which I was made to fill forms in which I had to specify the countries I’d travelled to recently and if I had any symptoms of COVID-19.
Since, thankfully, I had no symptoms, I was only given an individual briefing about serious self quarantining at home for 14 days. I then proceeded to the immigration counter, where after the regular process, I was stamped “TS Home Quarantine for 14 days” and let go. Our luggage was already laid out on the floor, separated and distanced from each others’, to avoid crowding at the belt.
It’s been a few days, but I haven’t met anyone yet. Not even my parents. I also received calls from the local police reconfirming my quarantine status, my health and if I showed any symptoms. The only way I can contribute to these measures being taken by the government is by isolating myself. Social Distancing is the only way to ensure everyone’s safety. It’s a war out there and our doctors, nurses, cops, other staff and authorities are risking their lives everyday, to save ours. I’m deeply grateful and in-debted to these heroes for their selfless services. I will do my part and urge those reading this to quarantine themselves as well!”
