“When I was in the 10th grade, there was a summer workshop for baking that I enrolled in, mostly because I was bored. Everybody else was much older, married and with kids, but I still think I proved myself, even at 15. However, I stopped baking when I was 17, you know how things are, you go to college, get a job, and fall into the mundane cycle of life. One day, I realized that that was not what I wanted to do, I wanted to follow my passion.
Of course, everybody around me told me it wasn’t a stable career choice and it was a bad idea to quit, but I applied for a 9 month course in Paris and packed my bags, and it was the best decision I ever made. It was tough at first living in a city where I didn’t speak the language or know my way around, but over time, I learnt to immerse myself in the culture and the people, and I had the best time of my life. The teachers were amazing, and I got to do an internship for Potel et Chabot, which is a huge deal! I even got to be involved in the catering for the French Open!
Once I got back, I put up a stall at a pop up bazaar, and through word of mouth, I got a request to do a birthday party for 200 people. It’s actually a pretty cute story how I got the order; I was playing badminton in Jubilee Hills club and chatting with an uncle about my baking, and without even double checking, recommended me to someone! Everybody loved my desserts, in fact, my friends’ parents call me the cupcake girl now.
Through lockdown I’ve had my doubts, I’ve pondered about whether I should have had a stable 9 to 5 job with a steady income, I’ve gotten the ‘I told you so’s from my parents, but things started looking up in June. I’ve started getting more orders on the Instagram page that I run, and it keeps increasing by the week. I’m in no way where I want to be, but I’m better than where I was a year ago, and that’s what really counts. I think it’s important to never stop chasing your dreams, even if people doubt you, and even if you doubt yourself.”
