It’s a difficult life here. I’m 80 years old and I’m still working. I’m paid 20 rupees per meter. I make about 5 metres of material and that earns me 100 a day. I get 1,000 rupees as pension per month. The problem is we’re asked to work only for 15 days a month. So on an average, I earn 2,500 a month. Imagine living with that money in today’s world, even if it’s in a village. My son is settled in Maharashtra. He left 18 years ago, and I have no idea what he’s doing there. He never picks my calls and refuses to send any money. My wife is suffering from high BP and diabetes. I have no money for her treatment. We hardly have money to eat 3 meals a day! We’ve spoken to so many governments and politicians, everybody says yes but nothing happens. We have been running from pillar to post but it is of no use. We have been living in poverty forever now. My problem is not having basic needs to live. Why is that our hardwork is ignored by the government? We put our blood and sweat into it. We’re so old, we don’t know where to go and what to do. I’m just counting my days. That’s the only thing in my control.
