“Sustainability has always been a part of my lifestyle. A lot of the Indian ecosystems also support sustainability to a large extent. So, it was pretty natural for me to think about ways in which I could create something durable that takes us a step forward in protecting our planet. Hence, after my college at the University of Southern California, I studied sustainability in architecture and was really interested in design and branding. After a brief stint with innovation design, I did a lot of research and then launched my own brand, Cancelled Plans, at London Design Festival in September 2019.
The core idea is very close to my heart – it is to normalise sustainable choices among today’s consumers. The passion for design and its ability to have a positive impact on earth is what really pushed me to start my own line. And, what better way than to use discarded items and create durable everyday products? It was a challenge, of course, but my excitement and intensive research made it possible! We use industrial waste generated from different manufacturing factories to create trendy and desirable products. It’s the best of both worlds – you’re being sustainable and chic! To keep our footprint as minimal as possible, we only create small batch productions with the help of highly skilled artisans. The materials are sourced from various factories like billboard printing, sock, condom and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The whole process of designing, creating and selling these eco-friendly products is a whole lotta fun! There’s always so much new we can do, which keeps me going. I get to experiment and try new things to see what works.
Leading a sustainable brand means every choice needs to be made carefully. Not just for the brand, but even individually, I try and use as little single use plastic as possible. I try and avoid fast fashion purchases. These little steps matter! In over a year of cancelled plans, the response has been great and I’m excited to see what else we can do with the waste we collect.”
