“After ‘Loser’ released, I saw a message on Twitter. An IAS aspirant, who had been preparing for UPSC for a while, was almost going to give up. But he watched the web series and tweeted saying he was inspired to work harder. I was touched! When someone you don’t know, messages you saying your work had this kind of an impact on them – you’re bound to be overwhelmed. Right from conceptualising this series to creating and finally, releasing it – it all feels like a dream.
When I graduated from Annapurna College of Film and Media and I met a producer for the first time, he told me film school students achieve nothing in the field. “They’re all about technicalities. They don’t know how to cope and deal with people on this field,” he said. I lost all my confidence that day. I had struggled a lot to raise money and pay the fees for that degree. My then girlfriend (now, wife) and brother, among others, helped me put together everything and pay for the course. That’s the kind of hardwork and struggle I had been through and for a producer to tell me none of that matters was a big deal! Fortunately, I was determined and worked towards what I wanted.
A few weeks ago, the same producer said he would do a film with me. Oh, what joy I felt at that! Isn’t that the first step towards success? It surely feels like it. He liked ‘Loser’ and the feedback I’ve been receiving has been great too. Most of my work – be it short films or this series, are all inspired by stories of struggle and sacrifice of people from non-privileged backgrounds. Struggle and challenges have been a big part of my life. It’s my biggest strength – to be able to show struggle in a touching way that many can connect with. But I do hope to try other genres and themes in my career, eventually. ‘Loser’ is just the start!”
