“My father had opened this shop back in 1948, when Hyderabad was still not independent. I wasn’t even born then. He really liked radios and he wanted to work on that. When I was young, I used to spend time post school, helping him with the repair work. Like him, I was also always interested in radios. During the time of Nizams, we would go to their houses to repair their systems. Once it was done, the king would listen to the sound quality and then, give us a lifafa (envelope) with money in it. We wouldn’t even see how much it was in front of him. Our heads were down and we would walk out with whatever he offered. But I must say that they were generous and kind.
Today, many things have changed with the advent of technology. My children don’t wish to continue this business. But I still have customers who come from the US, London and France to buy vintage radios. They exhibit it in different shows. Some of them make a lot more money by selling it outside. But it doesn’t bother me because I love radios and it’s good that it’s being preserved. I will repair and sell them at the same price till my last breath.”
