“My brother and I spent most of our childhood playing handball and football. I was quite passionate about sports even as a kid. It was natural for me to lean more towards sports than academics. During my class 10, I got the wonderful opportunity to go to Vizag to play handball but unfortunately I couldn’t play on the ground but eventually, in the following year, I got the chance to play and give my best shot. My passion and hard work did put me on the nationals list. I had decided I would follow my heart and become a sportsman- either football or handball.
I was a handball coach and every night, I went back to sleep with great satisfaction.
Although I had my plans for my future, destiny had it otherwise for me. My left leg got badly hurt while playing my favourite game of handball. Despite several treatments, I couldn’t get back to normal. Doctors told me that I could never play professionally. My world came crumbling down. My dream of playing for the country shattered right in front of me.
During this phase, I had my friends and coach by my side. As a gesture of love, they didn’t remove or throw away my jersey- no. 9. That surely made me feel proud.
I had two options with me, either to wallow in self-pity and sorrow or to move on and live life. I chose the latter. I now work as an Analyst in Deloitte. I do play for the company sometimes to maintain my fitness. Although I cannot play for the country, I play for myself and for my undying love for sports.
