“My father was a farmer. In my early teens, I would follow him everyday to the fields to help him in agriculture. This is back in the 1980s maybe. I never went to school. No education, so I hardly had the sense of time. But when I grew a little older, I moved to Hyderabad from my little village of Kalwakurthy. It was all new and different. Hyderabad was much smaller and less developed then, of course, but compared to my hometown, it was a lot. I worked as a daily wage labourer for a year. They paid me 60 per day, while I was paid only 18 rupees or so for the same work in my village. Even if I earned more, I couldn’t rent a house. Soon, I started riding a rickshaw. In the night, I would park it by the roadside and sleep in it. It was a struggle. I took small steps to save money, get a small house, expand my business by buying an auto and so on. Life didn’t change overnight. It was a gradual process of hardwork and belief. Today, there are more opportunities for anybody who comes from the districts to Hyderabad. But it’s always a culture shock! So I help them with whatever I have. Share meals, guide them to buy an auto or whatever they need. I believe that love and good health is all we need to survive. Money will come and go. If we can’t help each other, how are we going to live together in a society?”
