“My friends and I were on a road trip to Bhutan. While we were on the way, we tried to overtake, ignoring the indicator, and hit a truck. Fortunately, there was no injury, but that was pure luck. Curvy roads of Bhutan are accident prone if you don’t drive carefully. After coming back from the trip, I kept thinking about how people break traffic rules without realising the consequences. That’s also around the time I was graduating from IIT Guwahati. I spoke to a few friends and we decided to work on something related to automobiles and road safety. During the research, I came across a start-up which works on increasing the mobility of women by teaching them to drive. I was quite impressed with the idea and joined the team within two months after I quit my well paying job. When I spoke to women bikers from across the country, I heard very inspirational stories. I was reminded of my mother. During my college days, my brother, father and I were away from home and my mom used to stay alone for most of the time. Every summer, she would ask us to teach her to ride a scooty. We tried, but didn’t have enough time to dedicate. She was dependent on us and during our research, we realised that many women are dependent on the men in their house. Now that I’m associated with Stree Rides, I want to break that stereotype. I want to encourage women to learn to ride and be fully independent. As a team, we want to go one step ahead and work with transgenders too!”
