“Till date, I have taken a break from my work only thrice in my life. And the breaks have been an emotional ride because I am my best self when I am working.
My father always told me, that the only way to make it through this life is by and with your own hard work. So no matter what, working is what will keep you going. That has been etched into my mind ever since. So, right after my graduation from a well reputed college, I started working with ICFAI. Since that day till now, I have surfed through different working sectors and industries like a cake walk. Work felt like home to me. I worked with ISB, and even got a brilliant opportunity to work with the former RBI governor on a contract project. Oh, the joy I felt. It was an enriching experience.
I got married in 1999 and had a baby soon after. That was my first big break. I had to take 8 months off. When my child was 4 months old, I joined her into a creche and started working again. I am the kind of person who, no matter what job it might be, will give it my 100%. Both, at work and at home. I found the perfect balance between personal and professional life and dare I say, I got lucky. But, I got a lot of backlash for working. Many people in our circles would fill my daughter’s head with comments such as ‘They don’t care about you. All they care about is, money’, etc. On some days the exhaustion leaves me low and dull but my husband and daughter comfort me, saying, ‘You’re good at what you do, mamma. We’re always here for you.’ The second break I took was when my mother-in-law was unwell and I’m currently on my third break, ever since my husband was diagnosed with a cyst in his brain. I am always there for my family and they, for me.
I believe it is necessary couples communicate before marriage, about the division of labor in the household chores. I made that mistake and pampered my family. It’s all about making a choice and creating balance. Do what you want to. If you want to work, work. If you don’t, then don’t. Simple. The only thing you need to keep in mind is, no matter what you do, just give it your 100% and more and enjoy it, cherish it.”
