“It didn’t take us long as kids to realise that the society treats dark skin and a fat body as inferior. All through our lives, especially in school and college, we’ve had to face bullies who laughed at us for looking the way we do. Some of them wouldn’t laugh at us but they wouldn’t talk to us either. Nobody wanted to be friends with us because ‘we were too fat for them’! Luckily, we had each other’s backs from the beginning. As kids, we weren’t very emotionally attached. It was more about playing together and hanging out. But when a girl threw a bench on my leg in class 5, my sister punched her. Of course, punching someone isn’t right but back then, we only cared about standing up for each other, no matter what. We still do, but in non-violent ways now (laughs). We don’t even go to the neighborhood store without each other. But we can’t always be there for the other twin. When we work or study in different places, we deal with our own problems. In college, I was told not to wear jeans because it doesn’t suit my body type. When situations like this came up, I would go home and share it with her. Although we can’t be together all the time, we are always supportive of each other. A pep talk now and then, and a hug everyday (sometimes, virtually) – no matter which part of the world we are in, we know we can fight all the problem together. That’s the best part of having a twin!”
