“Holi has always been one of my favourite festivals! It reminds me of some of my best days in school and college. In school, we weren’t allowed to play Holi but we used to hide packets of colours in our bags. Once the last period was over, we would throw it on our friends and use bottles to splash water. That would be followed by punishment, but we didn’t mind. During my class 10 board exams, my friends and I were warned against playing holi because you wouldn’t be allowed to write the exam if you had colour all over your face. We were a mischievous group! So, we played holi in the evening and our teachers were so upset when they saw us the next day. It was a risk but childhood is about having fun and being carefree. As an adult, I still love playing with colours today. However, I make sure to use organic colours only, keeping in mind the affects it has on animals. They don’t cause any skin allergies either.
We usually decide and pool in to buy organic colours the previous evening during Holika Dahan. Today’s generation hardly knows the history behind this festival – the story of Hiranyakashap and how he tried to kill his son with the help of his sister Holika. His son, Prahlad, was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, who saved him from his father. Our parents would narrate this story to us, and we would love listening to it. I think it’s more fun when you know why you play Holi!”
