“In the late 19th century, in Surabhi village in the Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh, the curtains rose to a new chapter in theatrical history. It was here, in 1885, that the Surabhi drama theatre was born, under the visionary guidance of Sri Vanarasa Govinda Rao and Sri Chinnaramaiah.
Our theatre journey began with the mesmerizing performance of Keechaka Vadha, marking the inception of the Surabhi Dramas. Living in small tents, we roamed from one location to another every six months, carrying with us the timeless tales that would become our signature.
From our humble beginnings as a single group, we evolved into multiple smaller troupes, spreading across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, yet united by our shared love for the art of theatre. The Surabhi community became synonymous with innovation, blending traditional storytelling with modern techniques to captivate audiences far and wide.
As the world grappled with the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, we adapted, embracing digital platforms to continue sharing our art with audiences globally. Despite the distance, the spirit of Surabhi remained undaunted, as we connected with viewers through online shows, keeping the flame of theatre alive.
Now, as the world gradually reopens its doors, we eagerly return to the stage, ready to once again weave our magic in front of live audiences. One of the hallmarks of our community is our commitment to gender equality, with women and men seamlessly transitioning between roles, breaking down barriers with each performance.
Through our dedication and passion, we strive to preserve the rich cultural heritage of Surabhi drama theatre, ensuring that its legacy continues to inspire and enchant generations to come.”
