“It is that time of the year when all the hard work we put in for months pays off. It is Ramzan. Sardar Khan, my grandfather, started the handmade vermicelli (also known as sivayan) business 62 years ago. I remember the first time I learned the skill of making handmade vermicelli was when I was 15 years old. I used to see my grandfather and father do this. Just like any other teenager, I was curious to be part of a skill that has been passed on from generation to generation.

Unlike the machine-made vermicelli , handmade vermicelli needs strength, manpower, and lots of sunlight. Trust me, the first time when my father taught me the skill, my hands started to pain more than they ever did. Even though we are a small-scale business, the pride and joy this job gives each one of us is exhilarating. My grandfather started the business in the interiors of Chadharghat, but our fine workmanship helped us grow better in the twin cities. I remember when the media approached us for an interview, it was not only a proud moment for our business but we knew that we are taking our grandfather’s legacy on the right path.

My father has always motivated me in every path of my life. He believes that no work is big or small as long as you like what you are doing. His words have left a great impact and have made me who I am today.”
