Since 1951, Famous Ice Cream at Moazzam Jahi Market has been part of countless Hyderabad summers. Today, Md Mazher continues the legacy started by his grandfather, Mohammed Haleem, preserving the old hand-churned methods and fruit-based flavours that generations of Hyderabadis grew up with.
“Hyderabad summers and Famous Ice Cream have gone hand in hand for generations.
In the middle of the historic Moazzam Jahi Market, where people come for fruits, dry fruits, perfumes, and old-city charm, our shop has quietly existed since 1951. My grandfather, Mohammed Haleem, started Famous Ice Cream with a simple idea — to serve fresh fruit ice creams made the traditional way.
Even today, we continue to prepare our ice creams using fresh fruit pulp, milk, and recipes passed down through our family. During summer, mango becomes the favourite flavour for most visitors, while litchi, sapota, sitaphal, chikoo, strawberry, and dry fruit ice creams also remain popular throughout the year. We still follow the old hand-churned method because we believe people should taste the real fruit in every scoop.
What makes this place special for me is not just the ice cream, but the memories attached to it. Some customers first came here as children with their parents decades ago. Today, they return with children of their own. Many tell us our ice creams remind them of old Hyderabad summers — walking through Moazzam Jahi Market in the evening and ending the day with a cup of fruit ice cream.
Over the years, Hyderabad has changed and so have people’s tastes. Modern ice creams may be creamier and more colourful now, but we still hold on to the traditional flavours and methods that people grew up with.
For us, Famous Ice Cream is not just a shop. It is a part of Hyderabad’s memories.”
