“As a core member of the Hyderabad Cycling Revolution, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible impact cycling can have on our lives and our community. To me, cycling isn’t just a means of transportation—it’s a way of life.
Each morning, I hop on my bike and experience the city in a way that’s impossible while driving a car. There’s a special sense of freedom and connection that comes with pedaling through the streets. It’s a simple joy that brings me alive and keeps me aware of my surroundings.
On World Bicycle Day, we came together at the Outer Ring Road cycling track to celebrate our shared passion for biking. It was more than just a ride; it was a powerful statement for a brighter future for Hyderabad. We’re committed to building a safer, healthier, and more sustainable urban environment, and active mobility is the key to achieving that.
We’re keen on a few key points – if your destination is less than a kilometer away, consider walking. For trips up to five kilometers, cycling is the ideal choice. It’s fast, healthy, and eco-friendly. And for longer journeys, public transportation is the way to go. This balanced approach not only keeps us healthy but also helps alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution in our city.
One of our aspirations is to establish a public bicycle-sharing system in Hyderabad. Just imagine being able to grab a bike at a metro station and pedal to your destination with ease. Cities like Delhi and Bengaluru have already proven the success of such systems, and implementing it here would be a game-changer for us.
However, to truly make cycling accessible to everyone, we need better infrastructure. Our current bicycle lanes are sparse and often poorly maintained. We require more dedicated lanes and secure parking facilities to ensure cycling is safe and convenient for all.
We’re fortunate to have a government that recognizes the numerous benefits of active mobility. With their continued support, we can implement initiatives such as bike subsidies, providing bicycles to rural girls, and offering training to motorists and traffic police to ensure our roads are safer for everyone.
Additionally, our recent initiative at the Raidurg metro station introducing e-cycles is another step forward in facilitating convenient commuting from metro stations to various destinations for passengers. Our vision includes introducing more walkways and cycling tracks, fostering a culture where cycling on main roads is not only encouraged but also embraced by all.”
