“I started working in the telephone department thirty years ago. There has been a sea of difference with the private companies taking over the telecom sector. The present generation is hardly seen using a landline as it has been replaced by mobile phones.
Apart from the increase in the usage of mobile phones, what else has increased tremendously is the traffic. I handle the landline connections from Chermas to Basheerbagh. Looking at the kind of traffic and accidents that are increasing rapidly by the day, I believe the reason for this is careless driving. I see a lot of youngsters skipping signals or going the wrong way. This not only causes trouble for the pedestrians and roadside workers, but also the parents of these young lads.I have two sons and a daughter. I’ve always worked hard so that my family could live a better life and also see to it that I educate my children. Both my sons have pursued their engineering and my daughter has completed her LLB and is now married. Even though I retired in 2019, I still choose to work.
I have been working from a young age and tuning myself to the lifestyle of sitting idle will take a while. In the current scenario, where we are hit by various lockdowns, communicating with our near and dear has become tough. But with the help of technology and availability of internet, it has brought us all together. I feel proud to be in this field as telecommunications has become the only way to stay in touch with friends and family. Let us all celebrate the power of telecommunications and greet the sector on the occasion of World Telecommunication Day.”
