“The heavy rains have been a bit of a dampener this year, otherwise business booms from the June to September season. The people of the city have a fondness for jackfruit, particularly the Southern Karnataka variety, which is sweet and fibrous. I have been selling seasonal fruits for the last 20 years. Very few can resist the sight of golden jack fruits on display and I get a steady stream of customers.
I only sell one type of fruit at a time, simply because it’s a business approach that has worked for me. When jackfruit season is over, there is guava and custard apple season to look forward to.
Usually, I have to re-stock every three days. But the rains have played havoc this month. I have to sell off whatever is remaining in the next few days. If not, the Jack fruits will go rotten. I come here at 8:30 in the morning and sell fruits until the sunset.
I am 47 years old and have done various odd jobs in the past. I sort of fell into selling fruit due to a few circumstances and I am glad that it worked for me. However, I believe that if we do our with focus, we can achieve anything. I am blessed with three wonderful kids and my wife to support at home. My children are not keen on getting into the business field so I hope they could study well and get steady jobs. My older daughter is pursuing her Degree in B.sc and my younger one in B.com. My son is now in class 10 and he is interested to get into defence. I am facing all this difficulty just so they can have a better life and I will continue to work hard as long as I can.”
