“We make traditional Rajasthani special kathputli toys for our livelihood. All these are purely handcrafted.
Belonging to the Rajasthani Kathputli community, I have decided to pursue our ancestral profession even after marriage. Both men and women in the family work on making these toys.
We make different varieties of Kathputli toys everyday based. However, we don’t fix any targets. Sometimes, we make only 10 of these pieces in a day, and sometimes even more, based on the orders and designs. It’s definitely not easy as it seems as we have to focus on every minute detail while crafting these toys. We sell these pieces in exhibitions and public places across the city. Our major sales are during the festival days like Holi and Diwali.
We used to earn well in the past but our business has been badly impacted ever since Covid 19. We don’t even have proper shelter and we stay in makeshift huts in front of the Hitex Kaman in Hyderabad. However, we are continuing our work with the hope that things could get better this year. I don’t want to request any freebies from the government or support groups. I am willing to work hard and earn a living by crafting a quality product.”
